Oh boy, what a theme! This is exactly what Chiang Mai’s families need in way of kid-friendly restaurants– it’s what I’ve been waiting for for many years– well, at least since my oldest daughter started walking. LOL. Now I have two kids and often find myself wondering where to go for breakfast, lunch, coffee or dinner… somewhere, where my kids will also be entertained and blow off some steam. Personally, I’ve been searching Chiang Mai for kid-friendly restaurants or cafes for years with little success. But now right here, almost in my backyard the kid-friendliest restaurant in town– Nic’s Restaurant and PLAYGROUND! Hurray! Hurray! Dr. Seuss would be so proud of us parents to keep on his tradition of learning through playing. I don’t know about you but having kids is great joy but sometimes I need to take them to a place where they can entertain themselves while I sit back with a good book and a cup of coffee… or beer. I’ve just found my favorite spot for 2012!
So allow me to let you know what I thought of Nic’s Restaurant and Playground after my first visit last evening. After picking up the kids from school, we stopped by for dinner and some drinks. Nic’s Restaurant Playground just recently opened so I do keep this in perspective as they’ll have many issues to work out before the restaurant aspect of the business is synchronized and rolling smoothly. I used to own a restaurant myself and will never do it again. Anyhow, Nic’s Restaurant is structurally eye-catching. A place that’s hard to miss if you’re casually driving on Ratchapruek Road. It’s definitely a place built specifically for families with young children. Actually, this place is named after a kid that’s about six or seven years old. I talked to Nic briefly but didn’t get the fine details as he was quite busy managing his awesome Kids-of-Pirate-Cove like playground, complements of Chiang Mai Life Construction. Seeing all the kids jumping, climbing, digging and swinging is certainly rejuvenating but I definitely won’t be enjoying this playground the way these kids do. Man, how time just got away from me. It’s been 30 years since I was their age. LOL.
There were five or six families there when the four of us arrived and you guessed it, the kid’s didn’t care one bit about looking at the menu– not with that life size Play Boat screaming out their name. Our first time here so we stick to our natural response and order the common foods– kid’s hamburger and kid’s pizza. But of course, the adults need something to relax too– a beer for me and Piña colada for the lady in Blue. This is where we encounter our first disappointment with a new restaurant. I won’t get into details about our luck but the Piña colada took some time to track down and the pizza was forgotten. Good thing we really didn’t come to eat. LOL. Like I said, it will be months before synchronization of service.
The owners kindly took the Piña colada off our bill after several miscalls. Good thing because I forgot my wallet and my wife only had 800 Baht in her purse. Price for food and drinks on the menu is fair enough when all is considered. This restaurant is built for families with kids so if this is the reason for coming to Nic’s Restaurant Playground, you’ve come to the right place and the price is just right. And the food was fantastic!
